About Domaine Lafage Double Passage

Sometimes good things take time. And if you need to look round the vineyards again to make a good wine, then so be it, end of story! This is what happens with Domaine Lafage Double Passage.

Domaine Lafage Double Passage is a red coupage of red Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon. The first harvest takes place at the end of September, when the more acidic Cabernet Sauvignon is harvested; later, in mid to late October, it is time for the Grenache and Mourvèdre, which then reveal their more concentrated and sweeter side. This is the only way to achieve the special character of this red wine, signed by Domaine Lafage. In the heart of Roussillon, between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, the origin of this wine can be found throughout the I.G.P. Côtes Catalanes, on soils of black slate and clay loams. They are currently exploring the use of biochar. This residue is charcoal obtained from plant remains and biomass residues that is not burned, and it is applied to the soil to improve its properties. Likewise, to control yields, green harvesting is carried out in midsummer. For the moment, the results are positive, and these strains, which are subjected to high water stress, have tripled production with the use of this new residue.

These discoveries are a new breakthrough and a new chapter in the history of Domaine Lafage, whose origins date back two centuries. In total, Domaine Lafage has passed through the hands of seven generations. The latest of these is Jean-Marc and Eliane, a married couple who currently run this winery. Domaine Lafage Double Passage was born facing the Mediterranean, in old vineyards. The clusters and grapes are selected by hand. Harvesting is carried out in the most traditional way, avoiding the use of machinery. Finally, whole clusters is the final secret touch that will make Domaine Lafage Double Passage so special.
