About Dominio de Es Carravilla

There are vineyards that seem tamed. Perfect rows, everything in order, everything under control. And then there are the others. Those that appear to have chosen to follow their own course, as if time moves more slowly. Places where the vine does not merely grow, but endures. Where the land is not worked, but deciphered. Dominio de Es Carravilla originates precisely from one of those places.

In Atauta, in the Sorian Ribera del Duero, Dominio de Es is not a conventional winery, but a way of perceiving the landscape. Bertrand Sourdais has been exploring this extreme territory for over two decades, since he discovered a seemingly forgotten viticultural heritage in the late 1990s. Bush vines, many pre-phylloxera, planted on a mosaic of sandy, limestone, and clay soils at over 950 metres altitude.

The project is constructed like a fragmented map. 45 micro-plots that, together, barely reach 6 hectares. Each with its own character, rhythm, and way of expressing the place. Since 2000, they have been cultivated under ecological criteria with an almost surgical sensitivity to detail. Here, it's not about intervening more, but intervening better.

In the winery, this philosophy remains intact. The wine is not pushed, it is guided. Time is not hastened, it is respected. Every decision responds to a very clear idea: that the final result be as faithful as possible to its origin.

And within that map appears Carravilla. A minimal plot. Barely 0.10 hectares. Just enough for everything to matter. Situated at 935 metres altitude, on the lower part of a south-facing slope, Carravilla possesses something almost primitive. Sandy soils mixed with stone and limestone, white, hard, demanding. An environment where the vine finds not comfort, but tension. And it is precisely there that the wine's character begins to build. The old bush vines combine tinto fino with albillo mayor. They don't produce much, but what they yield is laden with identity. Here, there is no volume, there is concentration. There is no excess, there is precision.

The winemaking follows this same logic of respect and patience. Manual harvest, very long macerations —over 40 days— and ageing in French oak Burgundy barrels that aim to refine without masking. Everything is designed to preserve the raw energy that the wine already brings from the vineyard.

The result is about 600 bottles a year. Few, yes. But sufficient to understand that Dominio de Es Carravilla does not seek to please immediately. It possesses something more intriguing. Tension, verticality, and a constant sensation of being connected to the land from which it comes.

2022

2020

Dominio de Es Carravilla 2020 is a concentrated, fine and very elegant red wine. On this occasion, where he has opted for longer and gentler macerations, Sourdais himself has ensured that he has achieved exactly what he wanted. Labelled as “his dream vintage”, the nose is straightforward, with notes of ripe red fruit and hints of coconut, chocolate and plum. On the palate it is denser and firmer, with a thick tannin, where the meaty and juicy fruit (like nectarine) stands out. Long and persistent finish.
