About Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Mata los Pardos

Migration is a term that is currently on everyone's lips and poses numerous challenges for our politicians. Yet, this social phenomenon is by no means a modern occurrence. Many of our forebears had to confront similar trials, whether in pursuit of opportunities or fleeing from conflicts and persecutions. In the case of Antonio Estévez, a writer, intellectual, and anarchist from Berciano, this point is illustrated most poignantly. Initially, he left his home in the town of Valtuille de Abajo (Castile and León) in search of new horizons in Brazil and, upon his return, after investing in land, he was compelled to flee once again, this time to Mexico, due to the persecution of his anarchist beliefs by the Francoist regime. Of his four children, Helios, the youngest, endeavored to reunite the family and, although Antonio never returned to Bierzo, Helios has successfully imparted to his children a profound connection and love for their homeland and its origins. This is evident in Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos. A family project that, through the Versos wine range, pays tribute to their grandfather, bringing him back to Bierzo.

Originating from a remarkable site located in the heart of the Valtuille de Abajo vineyard, Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Mata los Pardos emerges. A blend of mencía and other red and white varieties planted on sandy and clay soils at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level. Old vines, between 90 years of age, are cultivated following traditional methods and harvested at the optimal point of ripeness. In the winery, the grapes ferment with 15% whole clusters and indigenous yeasts in 7,500-liter French oak foudres. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation and aging are carried out in French oak barrels of 225 and 500 liters for 12 months.

Hailing from one of the family's most prestigious plots in Valtuille de Abajo, Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Mata los Pardos is a homage to a father separated from his children and, at the same time, to a writer compelled to leave his native land. A mencía that embodies the expression of a unique terroir with all its poetic essence.
