About Fedellos do Couto As Xaras

Fedellos do Couto As Xaras is a single-variety Mencía red wine produced by the Fedellos do Couto winery in the DO Ribeira Sacra in Galicia, Spain.

Fedellos do Couto is a relatively new project set up by winemakers Curro Barreño, Jesús Olivares and Luis Taboada, whose family has owned Couto, a 12th century house in the Ribeira Sacra, for generations. They use totally heroic viticulture along the steep slopes of the Sil and Bibei rivers, where they grow varieties with true Galician identity and character.

Fedellos do Couto As Xaras is a red wine made with Mencía grapes from two vineyards that are located on both banks of the Jares River (Xares, in Galician) which is one of the tributaries of the Bibei River. This land has predominantly granitic and schist soils with quartzite.

The grapes bunches are vinified whole. They go through long macerations and ferment in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The resulting wine goes through a combined aging in concrete tanks and in different sized French oak barrels.

Fedellos do Couto As Xaras is a smooth and flavoursome red wine, a juicy Mencía with fresh acidity and beautiful minerality.

Fedellos do Couto As Xaras 2022 boasts an appealing cherry red hue with a medium depth. On the nose, it impresses with its intensity, offering aromas of red fruits such as raspberries and blackberries, accompanied by mineral and floral notes reminiscent of roses and violets, along with a subtle hint of undergrowth. On the palate, it is flavourful and medium-bodied, with silky tannins that provide a velvety texture. Its finish is pleasant, with a slight bitterness that makes it very smooth and easy to enjoy.

Fedellos do Couto As Xaras 2019 is a red wine that offers aromas of red fruits on the nose. It also has floral notes of roses and violets and nuances of undergrowth and minerality. On the palate it is smooth and mineral. A silky tannin red with a persistent mid-palate.
