About Feudi di San Gregorio Primitivo di Manduria

In the beginning, there were merely 30 hectares. Today, Feudi di San Gregorio — an Italian winery established in 1986 in Irpina (Campania) — is engaged in the cultivation of 300 hectares spread across southern Italy. The majority of its vineyards are located in this region, where they manage to encapsulate in each wine the diverse interpretations and perspectives of this fertile land; however, merely four years later, this winery situated in the village of Sorbo Serpico ventured beyond the province of Avellino to discover other equally intriguing terrains in southern Italy. These explorations led them to Vulture, Basilicate, and Manduria (in Puglia), where they produce Feudi di San Gregorio Primitivo di Manduria.

The town of Manduria — located in the north of the Salento Peninsula (in the heel of the boot that forms the Italian Peninsula) — lies within the D.O.C. Primitivo di Manduria, where this single-variety red wine of Primitivo is crafted. This variety, native to the region, is the first to ripen (hence its name). Late August marks the crucial time for harvesting this grape, which possesses high sugar concentrations that transform into elevated alcohol levels in the winery. Here, the Primitivo, with vineyards almost at the edge of the Ionian Sea, will thrive on calcareous and clay soils, with hot summers, mild winters (thanks to the sea breezes), and scant rainfall.

During the production of Feudi di San Gregorio Primitivo di Manduria, the aim is consistently to preserve and enhance the aromas of the Primitivo. For this reason, fermentation will take place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Specifically, this type of material is among the cleanest available, ensuring that the wine will not acquire any extraneous aromas or flavours. Thus, it will remain for several months in stainless steel tanks and in the bottle.
