About Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada
Cádiz has not existed on Palomino and Pedro Ximénez alone. There was a time, just before the phylloxera crisis (in 1878), when grape diversity abounded in this corner of southern Spain. Many of them, like the Beba and Perruno, did not survive the attack of this insect that dug tunnels in the soil, attacked the root and continued with the rest of the plant; others, most of them planted on sandy soils, managed to resist. It seems to have been impossible for phylloxera to reach the heart of the plant in these soft and shifting soils, where they could not break through. This fact was the saving grace of many grapes, like the Tintilla de Rota, a red variety, planted near the beach (between Rota, Chiclana and Chipiona), and which was usually used to produce sweet red wines. After a century the Tintilla de Rota has become a jewel and legacy of Cádiz that has been well cared for by the winegrowers for years. Both large and small growers have been involved in preserving (and recovering) this grape. One of them is González-Byass with their Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada red wine.
For this great company, one of the most iconic and important of the Marco de Jerez, the research and dedication to this variety has been the story for about 50 years. It was in 1972 when this winery began to work with the area’s different red varieties (we know that the Jerez region is more famous for its whites). However, despite how it may appear, Tintilla de Rota was nothing new for this company, where a wine very similar to Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada was being produced as early as 1841.
With Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada, the Tintilla de Rota is back stronger than ever. No effort has been spared in this new era: manual harvest (in 15 kg boxes), double selection of the clusters (in the vineyard and when they reach the winery), destemming and gentle crushing. Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada is placed in stainless steel tanks where it will macerate and ferment gently (at a controlled temperature) for 12 to 15 days. After alcoholic fermentation, it is time for malolactic fermentation and aging in French and American oak barrels for approximately one year.
Assembling and bottling are the final steps. Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada goes on sale, bringing in a new era for Tintilla de Rota. Like a phoenix, this variety rises from the ashes, stronger than ever, in a very limited edition that you should not miss.
| 2019 | Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Edición Limitada 2019 is a concentrated, intense and persistent red wine. Its cherry colour will surprise you, as well as its thick legs, which mark and remain on the glass for a while. The nose is very powerful and complex, with strong aromas of red fruit, black fruit, mineral touches and spices (cocoa, roasted). On the palate it is balanced, with a flavoursome acidity. At first it appears slightly sweet, but continues to be very dry on the palate. Meaty and voluminous, long, with round tannins. Long and persistent finish. |
