You have probably heard of the Airén grape. Indigenous to Castilla La Mancha, this white variety is typically used to fortify many of the fortified wines from southern Spain. Specifically, its juice is used to extract the wine alcohol that helps many wines from the D.O. Jerez-Xérès-Sherry reach 15 degrees (or more). Neutral and often overlooked, this grape is now shedding its undeserved reputation thanks to projects and wines like García de Lara Finca Villalobillos Airén Pie Franco. 
 
Treated with the respect and care it deserves, this grape is capable of achieving and demonstrating the most unexpected and high-quality results. This has been ensured by the García de Lara family, who have been working since 2017 to reclaim their family vineyards, many of which are centuries-old and have withstood the test of time. In the case of García de Lara Finca Villalobillos Airén Pie Franco, this white wine—as its name suggests—originates from Villalobillos, a vineyard located in the municipality of Corral de Almaguer, in Toledo. Since the 18th century, the García de Lara family has been managing the 284 hectares of fertile land where various grape varieties are cultivated. Of these, 60 hectares are dedicated to the Airén grape, which thrives on the limestone and rocky soils abundant in the upper part of the estate. Specifically, this terrain is divided into two distinct zones: the lower part, with fertile soil where cereals and legumes are grown; and the upper part, where the old ungrafted vines, planted in 1935, are located at an altitude of 708 meters above sea level. 
 
García de Lara Finca Villalobillos Airén Pie Franco is hand-harvested and brought to the family winery in Villarrubia de Santiago, built in 1878 and currently undergoing renovation and modernization. García de Lara Finca Villalobillos Airén Pie Franco is destemmed and gently pressed, obtaining the first juice (known as free-run juice). This initial batch—clear, clean, and of high quality—is perfect for the yeasts, resulting in much finer and more elegant wines.
