About Gran Callejo

With a wine broker grandfather who knew how to sell Ribera del Duero like no one else, the Callejo family lives up to their name at their winery, named Félix Callejo. A company that Felix’s son started in 1989 in Sotillo de la Ribera (Burgos) and that is nowadays run by his four sons with the same philosophy. The youngest daughter, Noelia, worked in wineries all over the world and then returned home to showcase the great treasure that the family has in its hands: a unique and very exclusive terroir.

Today, Félix Callejo is one of the Ribera del Duero wineries that best manages to showcase, through its wines, the maximum expression of the Tinta Fina variety and the terroir it comes from. Gran Callejo is an example of this. It is made in the north of Castilla y León, in an exceptional area at 850-930 metres above sea level. A single-variety wine that is made through a manual harvest and a double selection process before being fermented with native yeasts at a low temperature at the beginning and finishing at 30ºC. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 1 year old French oak barrels and then the wine is aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels. Finally it rests in the bottle in the cellar for 5 years before being sold.

Gran Callejo is the family’s Gran Reserva, a wine made from the vineyards with the lowest production in order to achieve maximum aging potential. A classic wine that is long-aging but not excessive.

2016

Gran Callejo 2016 is a mature red wine with aromas of ripe red and black fruit, menthol notes and mineral hints. On the palate it is fresh, silky and enveloping. A wine with fine tannins and a long, spicy finish.

2015

Gran Callejo 2015 is a robust red wine. Olfactorily, it is intricate and multifaceted, exuding aromas of ripe fruit, mineral undertones, aromatic herbs, eucalyptus, white pepper, walnut, licorice, and cocoa. On the palate, it presents a vivacious freshness, with flavors of red fruit, cocoa nibs, bay leaf, and pronounced tannins. Medium-bodied with a spicy edge. The finish is extensive and lingering.

2014

Gran Callejo 2014 is an aged red wine brimming with aromas of ripe black fruit, hints of aromatic herbs and mint, alongside spiced and cocoa nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied, luscious and embracing. This wine offers delightful red fruit sensations, a revitalizing acidity, and pronounced tannins. The finish is extensive, enduring, and highly balsamic.

2006 On the palate this wine is rich, fleshy, long and well-structured. It has lots of body, a magnificent acidity and some essential, sweet and ripe tannins. Very long and persistent. At retro-olfaction intense toasted notes and spices are felt.

Picota cherry colour with a maroon rim and violet reflections. Intense, clean and bright. Fine, pretty, lightly tinted tears show on the glass.

Intense, clean nose full of nuances. Ripe red and black fruit appear at first and gradually give way to aromas of spices, vanilla, cocoa, patisserie, with some lactic and toasted notes. Balsamic notes in the background. Worth pondering for a good while.
2005 Unctuous and long in the mouth, well-structured and full-bodied, with a magnificent acidity and direct, sweet, ripe tannins. Very long and persistent. Toasted and spicy notes are felt at retro-olfaction.

Picota cherry colour with a maroon rim and violet reflections. Intense, clean and bright, with fine, slightly tinted tears on the glass.

Intense and clean nose, full of nuances. Ripe red and black fruit appears at first and gradually gives way to spicy aromas of vanilla, cocoa, milky touches, patisserie goods, toasted notes and a a balsamic background... we recommend dedicating a good deal of time to this wonderful nose.
