About Gran Caus Negre

In times gone by, scientific ideas were dominated by geocentric theory. That is, the belief that the sun and the rest of the planets revolved around the earth. However, visionaries like Aristarchus of Samos, Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo Galilei had the courage to question the scientific status quo of the time. And although their contemporaries did not understand them and even called them crazy, time proved them right.

Something similar happened to Carlos Esteve, a winegrower who settled in one of the most mountainous areas of the Penedès, at the foot of the Garraf natural park, who had a vision to work in an area on the edge, planting unusual grapes and interpreting his environment in a very personal way. He even dared to build a new generation winery, using gravity as a starting point in each of the winemaking processes and taking advantage of the mountain rock as another building material.

The results were not long in coming. Can Ràfols dels Caus is currently one of the great Catalan wine estates and one of the benchmarks of the D.O. Penedès. Their flagship wine, Gran Caus Negre, is proof of this. A blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc Bordeaux varieties which, thanks to their chalky and rocky origin, have a surprising freshness and a strong Mediterranean character. In the winery, following a temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and then a minimum of 6 years in the bottle before release.

After such a long wait, Gran Caus Negre is a reserve wine that should be decanted 3 hours before drinking in order to enjoy all the fruitiness, minerality and elegance it has to offer.
