In "The Little Prince", Antoine de Saint-Exupéry taught us that "what is essential is invisible to the eye", a message the fox shares with the prince to explain that the truly important things cannot be perceived with the eyes, but with the heart. This principle was also shared by Carlos Esteva of Can Ràfols dels Caus, a staunch advocate of Garraf wines, who asserted that "exceptional wines possess something that goes far beyond what we are capable of perceiving with the eyes, nose, and mouth". For him, the invisible was the most crucial element in crafting a good wine: that intangible essence which cannot be seen but is felt with every sip. Carlos Esteva understood that a great wine not only expresses the terroir but also the individuality of its creator, something that is lost when a wine is made solely for economic purposes.
The Terraprima wine collection was Carlos Esteva's final project and a clear reflection of his philosophy. The Terraprima vineyard is situated on mineral-rich soils that were originally intended to become a cement quarry. However, with his vision, Esteva acquired the estate, preventing its destruction and transforming it into a vineyard with 40 hectares of vines, some of which are over 80 years old. From these limestone soils emerge two wines, distinguished by a unique mineral character.
One of these wines is Terraprima Negre, a red crafted from cariñena and garnacha, embodying the purity of the terroir in every drop. Organic farming is practiced, and the harvest is done manually at the optimal moment of ripeness. In the winery, the wine ferments in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. It then undergoes 6 months of ageing in French and American oak barrels, bestowing upon it exceptional complexity and elegance.
Thus, Terraprima stands as the legacy of a struggle for the invisible, for authenticity, for that which is unseen but deeply felt in every bottle. A true homage to the philosophy of one of the greats of the DO Penedès.
