About Heinrich Zweigelt

Heinrich Zweigelt is an organic and biodynamic, barrel-aged red wine made by the Heinrich winery in Burgeland (Austria) with the Zweigelt variety.

 

 

After traveling through Bordeaux, Spain, California and Italy, Gernot Heinrich dedicated himself completely to cultivating and vinifying the vineyards on the family estate in the town of Gols, next to Lake Neusiedl. The estate has 100 hectares of vineyards, a few kilometres from the Hungarian border, where he specialises in native grapes like Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt and produces wines of the highest quality.

 

 

Heinrich Zweigelt comes from flat plots where the soil is rich in humus, gravel and limestone. These vines are aged between 10 and 30 years old and lie on the slopes of the Leitha mountains. The team use biodynamic and 100% ecological agriculture, using organic and natural treatments instead of chemical products. The grapes are harvested manually.

 

 

In the winery, the Heinrich Zweigelt grapes ferment spontaneously with native yeasts and macerate for two weeks in wooden and stainless steel tanks. After pressing, the wine is transferred to wooden tanks and 500-litre oak barrels and ages there for 13 months.

 

 

Heinrich Zweigelt is the result of the great geological diversity around Lake Neusiedl. A very pure, juicy red wine.

 

2017 Heinrich Zweigelt 2017 is a smooth wine with aromas of fresh red fruit and a spicy background of liquorice, cloves and mint. On the palate it is tasty, delicate and elegant. The tannins are soft and rich, the acidity is subtle and the finish is very pleasant.
