About Herència Altés La Borrassona

Garnacha, one of the oldest and most versatile grape varieties in the world, is undergoing a revival in modern viticulture. Known for its adaptability to various climates and soils, this grape has captured the attention of winemakers and oenologists seeking to highlight its exceptional potential. This is how Núria Altés and her partner Rafael De Haan established their project in the village of Batea, in Terra Alta (Catalonia). Their winery, named Herència Altés, aims to showcase to the world the potential of garnacha in this southern Catalonian land from a sustainable perspective, while paying homage to its roots.

A project initiated in 2010 with much time and care has resulted in fruitful creations such as Herència Altés La Borrassona, a red wine made from garnacha sourced from an iconic estate of old vines cultivated organically to preserve the natural balance of the terroir. The harvest is carried out manually in small 18kg boxes, and once at the winery, the grapes are cooled overnight and the next morning pass through the sorting table to remove unwanted berries. The grapes are then destemmed and transferred, without crushing, into concrete tanks where they ferment with native yeast and gentle manual punch-downs. Afterwards, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged in Austrian oak foudres (one of 5000L and another of 2500L) for 12 months before bottling.

The result is Herència Altés La Borrassona, a fresh and very luscious garnacha that honours this classic variety with a rich history and a most promising future.

 

2022

Herència Altés La Borrassona 2022 is a medium-bodied, bright, cherry-red wine. On the nose, it reveals aromas of raspberry and strawberry, complemented by subtle lactic notes. Upon tasting, it offers a fresh and luscious entry, with fruit and toasted flavours elegantly intertwined. The finish is toasted and mineral, leaving a pleasant persistence on the palate.
