More and more, the market seeks products and producers that adhere to a stringent path towards sustainability and decarbonisation. The wine sector is no exception to this approach, and producers who have long been working from this perspective currently hold an advantage. In the case of Núria Altés and her partner Rafael De Haan, they began their project Herència Altés from its inception in 2010, committing to a sustainable and environmentally friendly way of working. So much so that it has become one of the few Spanish wineries affiliated with the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), an initiative that brings together wineries from around the world with the common goal of mitigating the effects of climate change and inspiring other industries to follow their example. The winery, situated in the stunning mountainous landscape of Batea (Terra Alta), produces authentic wines that are the purest reflection of the terroir.
This is evident in Herència Altés La Xalamera, a red wine made from the garnacha variety. Old vines from a plot, La Xalamera, are cultivated organically without the use of chemicals that could harm the natural balance of the terroir. The harvest is done manually in small 18kg boxes, and once at the winery, the grapes are cooled overnight. The next morning, they pass through the sorting table to remove unwanted berries and retain only the best. Twenty percent of the grapes undergo carbonic maceration in concrete vats, while the remaining 80% are destemmed, crushed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Afterwards, the wine is aged in 5000L Austrian oak foudres for 17 months.
Aiming to offer the best of Terra Alta, Herència Altés presents La Xalamera, a single-estate red wine that embodies a valuable agricultural legacy thanks to the tireless efforts of this pioneering couple. A marvellous garnacha that radiates fruit, freshness, and sustainability.
