Few terroirs in France are as exceptional as Les Perrières. Nothing compares to the gently sloping, clay-rich soils of this premier cru in central France. Few wines can rival the bottles that originate from this area. And it is here that Jean-Marie Fourrier has come to craft his J.M Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1.er Cru Les Perrières.
Only the best of the best. In the philosophy of this producer—currently one of the finest in Bourgogne—there is no other guiding principle. And there is a straightforward explanation for this: Jean-Marie Fourrier has trained with the best, including Henri Jayer and Véronique Drouhin in Oregon (United States). There, across the Atlantic, the Frenchman learned that great wines begin in the vineyard; and today, as the owner of his own domaine, he continues to practice this, meticulously cultivating the vineyard, where he dedicates all his attention throughout the year, caring for each vine in a completely respectful manner. Only in this way can the best results be achieved in the winery, with J.M Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1.er Cru Les Perrières being one of the finest wines to be found in France.
In the case of J.M Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1.er Cru Les Perrières, not much further intervention is needed. Only the diligent work in the field, the harvest, and the subsequent destemming need to be supervised in the production of J.M Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1.er Cru Les Perrières. The rest will be handled by the indigenous yeasts, which will carry out the alcoholic fermentation and the subsequent malolactic fermentation while resting in French oak barrels where it will be aged. This does not imply total disengagement from Jean-Marie and his team (far from it); rather, it requires complete patience during the time J.M Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1.er Cru Les Perrières needs to reach its full readiness. At this point, Jean-Marie has little to say, limiting himself to very gentle extractions and the use of minimal new oak (only 20% of the barrels are first-use).
So remember: when you open a bottle of J.M Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1.er Cru Les Perrières, you are not only experiencing one of the finest red wines from France but also a true masterpiece from Bourgogne.
