About Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage

Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage is a barrel-aged red wine produced by the Kanonkop winery in the Coastal Region (South Africa) with the native Pinotage variety.

Kanonkop is a family winery whose name is inspired by the hillock (kopje) that a cannon (kanon) would be fired from in the 17th century to alert the locals of foreign ships arriving. Located in the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch demarcation (Western Cape), popularly known as the “red wine bowl”, they produce world-leading wines. Privileged soils, an ideal climate and the most careful winemaking processes are the three keys to making each of their productions an authentic work of art.

Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage comes from vines aged between 5 and 20 years old. Strains planted on decomposed granite soil, these are sublime terroirs that are comparable to a French Premier Cru. Using traditional agriculture and meticulous monitoring, they produce very high quality grapes that are harvested at the optimum point of ripeness.

In the winery, Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage undergoes alcoholic fermentation in open concrete tanks at a controlled temperature of 28oC, with pump overs every two hours for three days before extracting the juice. Then, when the wine has been made, it goes through a 12 month aging process in 225-litre French oak barrels being used for the second and third time.

Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage is a very good introduction to Pinotage, a variety that comes from Pinot Noir and Cinsault. A red wine that stands out for its fruity and spicy character and a silky texture.

2017 Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage 2017 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of red and black fruits and touches of mocha. On the palate it reveals flavours of ripe red fruit and hints of spices. Dry, silky and persistent with a long and pleasant finish.
