Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand winery, located in Auckland, and is one of the most recognised wine businesses in the country.
Its story began in 1937 when married couple Mick and Katé Brajkovich arrived from Živogošće (a municipality in southern Dalmatia, in Croatia) to this city, considered one of the most important parts of the North Island. With some experience in vineyard cultivation and winemaking, the couple thrived in this new venture. Today this company is one of the most internationally recognised, thanks to the Chardonnay it produces in the purest Burgundy style. The best example of this is a bottle of Kumeu River Rays Road Chardonnay, a barrel-fermented, malolactic white wine that is aged for 12 months.
This type of winemaking began in the 1980s, when Michael, Paul and Milan (the grandsons of the Brajkovich couple) took over the business, swapping the traditional Dally Plonks (the name given to the wines produced by Croatian settlers, and which were undervalued) for single-variety wines (much more unfamiliar and unusual until then). Risks like these have taken this winery to the top, even having to find new territories beyond the land they have in the north of the island. This initiative and eagerness to grow has led them to special places like Mate’s Vineyard, Hunting Hill & Coddington and their latest: Rays Road in Hawke’s Bay.
This is where, in this last enclave, on clay and limestone soils, the Kumeu River Rays Road Chardonnay grapes are grown. This new site, acquired by the family in 2017, lies at 180 metres altitude facing north. Here the vines are dry cultivated, in order to obtain the highest quality grapes. Limestone soils retain water well. Following a manual harvest, the clusters are taken to the winery, where they are pressed whole. Once the must is obtained, Kumeu River Rays Road Chardonnay is racked into used French oak barrels, where it undergoes alcoholic fermentation (with native yeasts) and malolactic fermentation, complemented by a year of aging on the lees in the same containers.
In 2014, during a blind tasting organised by Stephen Browett (the winery’s London distributor), Kumeu River’s Chardonnay made history by placing ahead of the best white Burgundies and triumphing over wines from some of the best French producers. A must-try wine for Chardonnay lovers
