About L'Archetipo Rosato di Susumaniello Salento

A farmer by birth in the town of Castellaneta, in the region of Apulia (Italy), Francesco Valentino Dibenedetto seeks the archetypal condition of the soil, the ecosystem, and the vineyard, hence the name of the winery L'Archetipo. With this aim, in 1980 he transformed his project into an organic one, and by 2000, he had converted it to biodynamic. However, not content with the results, he took a step further by adopting synergistic agriculture, a sustainable approach that maximizes production through the interaction and diversity of plants and animals, emulating the principles of natural ecosystems. Together with his wife Anna Maria and their four children—Carlo Nazareno, Domenico, Andrea, and Marie Clelia—their wines have gained recognition and have become some of the most prominent references in southern Italy.

In his commitment to native varieties, he presents L'Archetipo Rosato di Susumaniello Salento, a rosé wine crafted from a small 2-hectare vineyard, where the susumaniello, an emblematic variety of Apulia in which L'Archetipo has full confidence, is revived. Its name, which in the local dialect refers to the plant's high productivity because it produces clusters "like a donkey," reflects the richness of the region's winemaking tradition. The grapes are cultivated following the principles of Rudolf Steiner, and the harvest is conducted manually at the optimal moment of ripeness. In the winery, the fruit is destemmed and crushed to initiate maceration with the skins for 10 hours. Subsequently, a racking and gentle pressing are carried out, followed by alcoholic fermentation, which begins with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine remains in these same vessels with its lees for 7 months, during which malolactic fermentation occurs. Finally, it is bottled without clarification or filtration, and with a minimal addition of sulfur dioxide.

Part of the IGT Salento, L'Archetipo Rosato di Susumaniello Salento is the result of the rediscovery of forgotten vines and a celebration of the viticultural heritage of Apulia. A fresh, intense wine with its own character that reflects the passion and dedication of Francesco and his family.
