About La Basseta

La Basseta is a red wine from the Priorat region. It is produced by the Mas Alta winery and is a blend of 3 grape varieties, Cariñena, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyards which provide the grapes for La Basseta are located on slopes of licorella, also known as pizarra parda. The plots themselves are at an altitude of between 350-550 metres. Although the yield per hectre is low, a fact that causes a small amount of grapes harvested, this means that the grapes that are harvested are of very high quality. The Cariñena grapes used are over 100 years old, while the Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are relatively young, at around 20 years old.

 The harvest has one premise according to the winery. The premise of respect, respect towards nature and towards the generations before that worked for and on the vineyards.

The grapes for La Basseta are put in cold storage and are put on a double selection table. After, the grapes go undergo barreling by gravity. In all of these processes, a strict temperature is maintained.

Before La Basseta is bottled, it is aged for 16months in French oak barrels from Allier of which 80% are new, and 20% are one year old.

The Mas Alta winery was founded back in 1998 when Michel Vanhoutte with other Belgians decided to found it. Michel Tardieu, one of the great winemakers of the Rhone valley, currently advises the team on the development of the four wines produced today.

2015 La Basseta 2015 is a deep, intense and mineral red wine. A magnificent vintage of this wine, with a great balance between maturity and freshness. On the nose aromas of ripe red fruit stand out with mineral, roasted and balsamic notes. On the palate it is full-bodied, with a sweet entry and a lingering and persistent finish.
2012 Crisp and possessing excellent acidity. It reveals a delightful tannic structure and an extended finish, imbued with roasted nuances and spicy undertones.

Captivating deep cherry hue with violet glimmers.

Complex and potent mineral and balsamic aromas. Black fruit and almond presence. Profound in depth.
2010 A fresh feeling in the mouth thanks to its elegant acidity. Nice, melted tannins are noticed, adding to the fresh sensation.  Long aftertaste, leaving delicate roasted notes and oriental spices.

Cherry red with a violet rim.

Complex, good intensity aromas with strong mineral notes, balsamic notes, black fruit and almonds. A profound wine.
2005 This wine's palate is broad, velvety, rich, mineral and silky all at the same time. We find notes of fresh fruit paired with liquorice and a very long persistence. This is a noble red wine, with personality and class. 

A dark picota cherry colour, almost black, with bluish reflections. High robe, very bright.

A delicate and expressive nose, very fine, very well-defined, with aromas of ripe red fruit, subtle herbs, spices and aromatic herbs. A very balanced set.
