Shirley Temple, Marisol, Picasso, Stevie Wonder… There was a time when child prodigies were commonplace. Today, however, talent remains, but it competes in a much more saturated world. Technology, widespread access to education, and hyperexposure have raised the bar to levels where merely showing promise is insufficient. One must demonstrate, and swiftly.
In the world of wine, however, there is still room for such stories. Not so much of child geniuses, but rather of precocious paths that defy conventions. This is the case of Riccardo Baldi, at the helm of La Staffa, a small winery nestled in the hills of Staffolo, in the province of Ancona, at the very heart of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi in Marche, Italy.
The story begins in 2004, when the Baldi family acquires a farm with barely two hectares of vineyard. Today, it spans around ten hectares, acquired gradually, plot by plot, without haste yet without pause. At the centre of it all is Riccardo, born in 1990, who has transformed in a few short years from a university student to one of the most intriguing figures in the region. In Staffolo, he is known as the enfant prodige of verdicchio.
A nickname that is not the result of mere luck, but of a solid training alongside local luminaries such as Lucio Canestrari and Corrado Dottori, which was crucial in crafting his own style: precise, honest, and increasingly refined.
This style is clearly reflected in wines such as La Staffa Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Classico Rincrocca Riserva. In the vineyard, the work is based on organic farming with a distinct leaning towards biodynamics, cover crops, and a minimal and controlled use of copper and sulphur to maintain sanitary balance.
In the winery, the philosophy remains the same; intervene only when necessary. The verdicchio grapes, grown on clay and limestone soils, are harvested at their optimal point and immediately pressed. After a careful selection, they ferment in stainless steel and cement tanks at controlled temperatures. Subsequently, the wine rests for 12 months on its fine lees before being bottled.
La Staffa Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Classico Rincrocca Riserva presents us with tension, depth, and an identity that requires no embellishments. For if Riccardo Baldi demonstrates anything, it is that even in a world saturated with talent, there is still room for those who know how to listen to the vineyard and speak through the wine.
