About Lasendal

In a bid to consolidate efforts, cooperative members pool resources, minimise costs, and gain access to technology and expertise that would otherwise be challenging to acquire individually. Within this framework, five families from Montsant in Catalonia united in the village of Capçanes in 1933 to establish La Cooperativa de Capçanes. The venture proved so successful that, over time, rather than focusing on bottling large volumes, they dared to produce wines of superior quality. This approach led them to liaise with the Jewish Community of Barcelona in 1995 to craft an unpasteurised kosher wine using the "Lo Mebushal" method. In doing so, they became a benchmark for the production of this type of wine, demonstrating that cooperatives and quality can indeed go hand in hand.

A testament to this exemplary work is found in Lasenda, a red wine crafted from grapes sourced from 60-year-old Garnacha vines and a small percentage of Syrah aged between 10 to 15 years, planted on calcareous clay soils. Traditional cultivation is practised, and once the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are harvested and promptly transported to the cooperative. There, the selected and destemmed grapes undergo maceration for 20 days and commence fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation occurs in a cement vat. Finally, a portion of the wine matures for 9 months in a 3000-litre French oak foudre.

Thus, with the elegance of Garnacha in harmony with the robustness of Syrah, Lasendal is a fluid and enticing red wine. A guarantee that dispels the notion that cooperative wines must be bulk, harsh, and lacking in finesse.
