About Les Sorts Vinyes Velles
Les Sorts Vinyes Velles is a barrel-aged red wine made by the Celler Montroig winery in the D.O. Montsant with the Cariñena and Garnacha varieties.
The Celler Masroig winery is over 100 years old (1917) and located in the town of El Masroig (Priorat). A leading cooperative in the area, making wines that are a pure reflection of the environment. Throughout its history, and especially since the creation of the DO Montsant in 2001, their productions have evolved into wines with great character and personality.
Les Sorts Vinyes Velles comes from their own vineyards located in southwest Monstant, a warm and dry area that gives the grapes a good concentration and optimum ripening. These vines are over 60 years old and planted in mainly red clay soil. After the clusters have been carefully selected, they are harvested manually in boxes to avoid damaging the grapes.
Les Sorts Vinyes Velles is traditionally vinified through alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Then malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels where the wine rests for 17 months. After aging, it is bottled without clarifying and is gently filtered. It then rests in the bottle for 24 months before going to market.
Les Sorts Vinyes Velles is a flagship red wine from this winery with a long cooperative history that has managed to hold onto tradition as well as satisfying today’s consumers.
