Literally four ‘corros’ was what Bryan MacRobert and the Canals family found when they decided to start making wine in their winery.
It was 2013 and MacRobert & Canals were taking their first steps in these small plots that don’t have to be round, but are unique due to their natural circumstances. This type of plantation is very typical in the D.O. Ca. Rioja, and they are not usually very profitable (little more than 3,526m2). For this reason, most of the time red and white grapes are insufficient to produce wines, and they have to be blended to make rosé wines. This is not a problem for Bryan or the rest of the Canals family. And that is how MacRobert & Canals Cuatro Corros was born.
The uniqueness of MacRobert & Canals can be explained mainly by two things: the first is that they started from scratch, without belonging to any great Rioja winemaking family (in fact, Clara’s father, who is also part of the project, is a lawyer); the second is their aim to produce small productions of very unique, expressive wines that are able to showcase the great richness and variety that exists in the D.O. Ca. Rioja. For Bryan, it is not that the wines from this denomination are bad (quite the opposite), but he does believe that they are stuck in a rut, where wood and large-scale productions always dominate.
MacRobert & Canals Cuatro Corros is the opposite of this, achieving a very limited production, but of great quality where red varieties like Garnacha, Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano are blended with white varieties like Viura, Malvasía and Garnacha Blanca). These varieties grow mixed in small vineyards, known as corros, located in Villabuena de Álava (in La Rioja Alavesa) and were planted before 1960. The most characteristic feature of this area is its planting pattern, prior to mechanisation, with very narrow spacing between rows, which requires manual labour.
In the winery, the MacRobert & Canals Cuatro Corros grapes are selected and fermented in whole bunches in very small tanks. For a week, the grape pulp is stirred daily, allowing MacRobert & Canals Cuatro Corros to finally age in oak barrels for a year after fermentation (where it is stabilised and naturally filtered).
One of the best red wines you can find!
