About Majas Cortado

The municipality of Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, at the foot of the Pyrenees in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France is home to Alain Carrère and his wife Agnès. This winemaking couple inherited the family land in 1992 and decided to found Dominio De Majas. However, their winery took a new direction when they met their neighbour Tom Lubbe, a prestigious South African winemaker who moved to the region in 2001 to set up his own project, Matassa, and opened their eyes to the benefits of organic agriculture. Under his guidance, in 2007 they converted their 20 hectares of vineyards into sustainable vineyards and to enhance the original expression of their terroirs, they make simple and honest wines with minimal intervention.

One example of this change of philosophy is Majas Cortado. A red wine made in the VDP des Côtes Catalanes from vineyards growing in unusual surroundings with vines, meadows and forests. It is made with Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena vines with an average age of 30 years old. These vines are planted at an altitude of 350-400 metres above sea level in clay and limestone soils and under the influence of the Mediterranean. They are cultivated without herbicides, fungicides or any other chemical products. Once the grapes have been harvested by hand, 50% are pressed in whole bunches and 50% are destemmed. After 2 days of maceration, the two wines are co-fermented with native yeasts. Then the blend spends 4 months in concrete tanks and is finally bottled unfiltered, unclarified and with a minimal amount of SO2.

The result is very striking. Majas Cortado is an honest, gourmet red wine that is full of sunshine. The perfect coupage for those who love Roussillon, this wine beautifully expresses the qualities of the Mediterranean terroir.

 

2020

Majas Cortado 2020 is a juicy red wine with aromas of white flowers, red forest fruits and hints of Mediterranean forest. On the palate it is smooth, fruity and very intense. A wine with good acidity, round tannins and a persistently pleasant finish.
