The name speaks volumes: “Extincta Vitis” (extinct vine). A tribute to what was on the brink of vanishing and now returns with vigour, thanks to the reverence for history and the insight of those who believe in it. This is how Mascorrubí Extincta Vitis is introduced. An act of recovery, remembrance, and future encapsulated in a bottle.
The star is the sumoll blanc, a rare white mutation of a traditionally rugged and overlooked variety, the sumoll. For decades, it was disregarded due to its low yield and austere nature. However, today it is celebrated as an oenological gem that, when handled with care, unveils an astonishingly fresh, subtle, and honest expression.
This act of revival is signed by Mascorrubí, a project with soul, located in the Pla de Manlleu, deep within the Penedès, on lands that in the 13th century belonged to the Templar commandery of Castell de Celma. Here, at altitudes ranging from 500 to 700 metres, the vineyards thrive on clay-limestone soils, under organic cultivation and with manual harvests.
Mascorrubí Extincta Vitis is crafted from sumoll blanc cultivated in traditional bush vines. Following the manual harvest, the grapes undergo a cold pre-maceration for 8 hours at 15°C, followed by fermentation and maceration also at low temperatures (max. 16°C), without ageing, to preserve all its freshness and varietal character.
The result is Mascorrubí Extincta Vitis, a direct, clean, and vibrant wine that expresses the essentials without embellishment. That is, the strength of a forgotten grape, the soul of a landscape, and the beauty of what was nearly lost... but fortunately was saved.
