If each wine region has a perfect style, there are always specific Crus that faithfully represent it. In the case of Barolo, in Piedmont, of the 12 communes that make up this DOCG, it is probably the medieval village of Serralunga d’Alba that best represents it. One of its architects, the Massolino family, has been showcasing the essence of the place for four generations and, since their ancestor Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896, the winery has some of the best Barolo Crus. Plots where the major component is limestone which, together with unique microclimatic characteristics, produce classic style wines that represent the character of the denomination like no other.
Their basic Barolo, Massolino Barolo, is made from 7 hectares of Nebbiolo vines aged between 10 and 55 years located in the municipality of Serralunga. The grapes are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and, once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually and immediately taken to the winery. There, the fourth Massolino generation vinifies as tradition dictates. Collecting grapes from different vineyards, fermentation begins at a controlled temperature of 31 to 33 degrees, with skin-contact maceration for 15 days. The wine is then aged for 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels and finally, it is bottled and remains in the cellar for another year before being released for sale.
From one of the most important Crus of the denomination, Barolo di Massolino has all the elegance, complexity and finesse of a classic style Barolo. All the tradition of the Piedmont at an unbeatable price.
