About Montecillo Crianza

The quintessential classic Rioja, if ever there was one. Montecillo Crianza is a red blend of tempranillo and garnacha tinta. The timeless wine, crafted by the Montecillo winery in the DOCa Rioja, yet with a completely refreshed character.

Montecillo Crianza hails from Rioja Alta in northern Spain, specifically from Fuenmayor, a village of 3,000 inhabitants, located very close to the Ebro River. It was there that 145 years ago, in 1870, Celestino Navajas Matute laid the foundations of Montecillo, becoming the first winery in the village and the third oldest in La Rioja. Today, after no generational succession (Luis Navajas, Celestino's grandson, had no children), the facilities were acquired by the Puerto de Santa María-based group Osborne. This transaction in 1973 was followed by improvements and renovations, such as the construction of new production facilities in Navarrete.

Today, Montecillo has become one of the prominent names found on bottle labels worldwide, where, despite its large productions, the original quality, essence, and purity are maintained. Such is the case with Montecillo Crianza. After an initial controlled fermentation at a temperature of 24°C, Montecillo Crianza will spend two to three days cold macerating in contact with its skins. From there, Montecillo Crianza will move to underground tanks, where the malolactic fermentation takes place. The final touch is provided by the semi-new American oak barrels, where Montecillo Crianza will undergo oxidative aging for 18 months. Lastly, the months in the bottle will be crucial to properly savor and develop Montecillo Crianza. The timeless Rioja with today's quality.
