About Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland Reserve

Certain projects are born to make a difference, and Moric Winery is one such endeavour. While Heinz Velich has earned acclaim with the sophisticated Chardonnays of the family estate, his brother Roland Velich chose a different path to revive the Blaufränkisch of Burgenland and demonstrate to the world that this native Austrian grape can rival the great international reds.

His mission is no easy feat. The Blaufränkisch in Burgenland often appears over-extracted and heavily oaked, resulting in powerful wines that do not always allow the grape's delicacy and elegance to shine through. Roland seeks something different: wines that are subtle, refined, and full of character, faithfully reflecting their origin without unnecessary embellishments or chemical additives. As he himself states, "The fundamental idea of Moric is simply to produce wines that clearly demonstrate their origin."

Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland Reserve is evidence that his vision succeeds. Eighty percent of the grapes are sourced from steep vineyards on slate and limestone, with the remaining 20% from sandy and clay soils on the plateau, underpinned by a limestone subsoil. The vines, aged between 25 and 55 years, yield concentrated and complex fruit. Fermentation is conducted with spontaneous yeasts, with open maceration for three weeks, and the wine is aged for 20 months in barrels of 500 to 1000 litres, without fining or filtration.

Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland Reserve is elegant and precise, where each sip reveals the soil's minerality, the terroir's freshness, and the vintner's patience. A wine that proves liberating the Blaufränkisch from trends is not only possible but necessary. An indigenous grape that shines on its own, with authenticity and without compromise.
