About Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove

Inspired by Bordeaux stars like Lafite and Latour, Marquis Ludovico Antinori founded Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in 1951, in the heart of Bolgheri. This is a beautiful area of Tuscany, a few kilometres from the Mediterranean coast which, thanks to a great terroir and an excellent microclimate, French varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc produce great quality wines. Wines known as Super Tuscans because they are made with non-traditional grape varieties and modern winemaking techniques and, although at the time the Regulatory Council relegated them to the Table Wines category, they are now the pinnacle of the most sought-after and expensive Italian wines on the market.

With its first wine Ornellaia as a reference, the estate’s “second wine”, La Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, receives the same care as the first. A coupage of French Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc varieties that shine in the evocative landscape of Bolgheri. The grapes are harvested by hand in 15 kg baskets and the bunches are selected by hand on a double sorting table, destemmed and gently pressed. Each variety and each plot is vinified separately and alcoholic fermentation is carried out partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in concrete vats at a constant temperature of 22-28°C for two weeks. This is followed by a maceration that lasts about 10-15 days. After malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is racked into barrels (25% new and 75% used once) and stays there for about 12 months. The wine is then blended and aged for a further 3 months. Finally, it is bottled and released for sale 6 months later.

So, Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove, the second wine from this prestigious winery that, under the DOC Bolgheri Superiore, presents us with an outstanding expression of Bordeaux grapes under the Tuscan sun.
