About Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón

In the Valle de Carraovejas, directly opposite the castle of Peñafiel, lie the terraces of El Anejón, a natural amphitheatre with loamy-limestone soils of significant minerality, where the vineyards of tinto fino, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot thrive. From this amphitheatre—the first terraced plot in the DO Ribera del Duero—emerges Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón, a red wine crafted exclusively in the finest vintages.

Pago de Carraovejas, established by José María Ruiz, is a benchmark in the DO Ribera del Duero. This vineyard, spanning 9.43 hectares, is distinguished by its compact and austere loamy-limestone textured soils, which impart great minerality to the wines. Its predominantly westward orientation ensures substantial solar exposure for the Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón vineyard. Additionally, the region's continental Mediterranean climate, characterised by scant rainfall and harsh, lengthy winters reaching temperatures as low as −10 °C, plays a crucial role.

The harvest of El Anejón is conducted manually in small crates, meticulously selecting each cluster and berry in the winery after passing through a cold chamber and selection table. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occurs in small French oak vats, employing indigenous yeasts and bacteria that honour the natural expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the wine matures in new 600-litre fine-grain French oak barrels, where it acquires structure, balance, and subtle notes of vanilla and ripe fruits. Gravity-driven racking and natural clarification with egg whites ensure an elegant and expressive wine.

Allow yourself to be captivated by the complexity of Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón and savour an extraordinary sensory journey from the terraces of Carraovejas to your table.
