In 2011, Paltrinieri Grosso was introduced for the first time, a sparkling white wine produced by Paltrinieri, the winery located in the northeast of Italy, in the Emilia-Romagna region. The launch took place just a few weeks after the death of Gianfranco Paltrinieri, the previous owner of the winery and father of Alberto Paltrinieri (the third generation currently leading the business); but Alberto's mother and Gianfranco's widow insisted that the wine would be presented despite everything, as it was the best way to honour the deceased.
A decade has passed since then, and Paltrinieri Grosso continues to be produced. Specifically, it is the first sparkling wine made in these cellars using the traditional method and under the D.O.C. Lambrusco di Modena. Initially, Alberto, who ventured into this production encouraged by his friend - the journalist Paolo Massobrio - had no idea. Nevertheless, that was not a problem as "with great humility" he turned to Christian Bellei, who helped and taught him the secrets of this ancient method. "Copying from the best is an act of intelligence," says Alberto. Now, knowing the keys, he only needed to secure good raw materials. But that was not an issue since the excellent grapes came from their own 15 hectares of vineyard that the family owns between the Secchia and Panaro rivers, where the soil is predominantly loamy and sandy, rich in organic matter.
The harvest of the lambrusco di sorbara - the only variety used to make Paltrinieri Grosso - took place in the first week of September. Undoubtedly, the bottle fermentation, followed by 24 months of aging on lees and several more months in the bottle, is the essential touch of Paltrinieri Grosso. 100% lambrusco di sorbara. 100% traditional method.
