About Pozo Alto

Pozo Alto is a red wine coupage of the Graciano, Garnacha and Tempranillo varieties from the DOCa Rioja made by Olivier Riviere.

Olivier Riviere is a restless winemaker who started his project in 2006 after working with renowned Burgundy and Spanish wineries. He cultivates his vineyards without using herbicides or chemical fertilisers, harvests his plots by hand and vinifies them without adding commercial yeasts.

The Pozo Alto vineyards were planted in 1930, in the vicinity of the Rioja Alavesa town of Laguardia. The vines are planted in bush form in clay-limestone and sandy soils at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. The yield is very low but they do produce a very concentrated and balanced grape. They are cultivated organically and biodynamically and are harvested by hand so that a thorough first selection of clusters can happen in the vineyard.

When the Pozo Alto grapes reach the winery, they are destemmed by hand and a small amount of stems are left on the grapes. They are then fermented in oak vats at controlled temperatures with native yeasts. Finally, the wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in 220 and 500-litre used French oak barrels.

Pozo Alto is a unique wine with only about 1,800 bottles produced each year. A fresh, fruity and spicy wine that is balanced and structured.

Pozo Alto 2017 is an enthralling wine that has captivated critics. Exhibiting a deep, vivid, and lustrous dark red hue, this red wine reveals aromas of black fruit, crushed berries, dried flowers, cedar, spices, and sandalwood. On the palate, it is profound and intricate, full-bodied, where the tannins are silky and ripe, well-rounded. Nuances of limestone and a refreshing quality are present. It culminates in a lengthy and delightful finish.
2016 Pozo Alto 2016 is an exemplary wine for bottle aging, boasting robust acidity and a well-structured tannic framework. It presents a sharp profile, with substantial body, refined tannins, and impressive length.
