About Selvanevada

An everyday wine, the kind you pour yourself to switch off when you get home after a tiring day. This is the style that Carmen Pérez, with help from oenologist Basiliio Izquierdo, wants to give to Selvanevada, a red wine made in the Villota winery in Rioja Alavesa.

This is where you need to look at newspaper archives and studies. You must have read that a glass of wine a day is good for the heart, right? The man responsible for this fact, which everyone knows, but no one knows where it came from, was René Favaloro, an Argentine cardiologist who claimed in a study that the polyphenols contained in a glass of wine a day were good for your health. Selvanevada is the perfect wine to use for this medical purpose.

The soil of the D.O.Ca. Rioja lights up the grapes used in this red wine. The vines lie on the San Rafael estate, right by a meander of the Ebro River, in the village of Laserna. Different grape varieties are selected to make Selvanevada from this 113-hectare vineyard.

In the winery, the Selvanevada fermentation process is key. Over the 12 days, there are pump-overs and the grapes are destemmed. This latter technique, which involves removing the wine from the tank and returning it in the middle of fermentation, encourages oxygenation and the corresponding increase in yeasts (with oxygen being essential for the yeast’s development in the early stages of fermentation). After this, it is devatted and two days later it is transferred to French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and the lees are separated in 3 rackings.

Finally, the 6 month aging process is the final touch needed to give Selvanevada all the character that makes it the best everyday wine.

2021

Selvanevada 2021 emerges as a youthful and exuberant red, with the scent of ripe red berries leaping from the glass, interwoven with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. Upon tasting, its succulent character floods the palate, unveiling nuances of truffle and a discreet touch of oak that rounds out the tasting experience. This wine, with its vivacity and zest, is a pristine reflection of youth and fruit in their most ebullient and approachable form.
2020

Selvanevada 2020 boasts a deep and vivid hue. Aromatically, it is intricate and effervescent, exuding a predominantly fruity and multifaceted character. On the palate, it presents a refreshing and well-defined structure, infused with nuances of nutmeg, cinnamon, and truffle.
2019

Selvanevada 2019 is a robust and succulent red. On the nose, it exhibits delicate hints of oak that accentuate the truffle aroma. The palate is vibrant and crisp, continuing the lineage of previous vintages with nuanced spicy undertones such as cinnamon or nutmeg.

Selvanevada 2018 is a juicy red wine. On the nose it has fruity and complex aromas. On the palate it is fresh, with light notes of wood, nutmeg, cinnamon and truffle.
