About Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva

Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva is a barrel-aged red wine made with the Tempranillo and Graciano varieties by Sierra Cantabria in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

The Eguren family has been cultivating the vineyard since 1870, with the 5th generation going one step further and building their own winery in 1957 in the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (Rioja Alta). Under the Sierra Cantabria brand, brothers Marcos and Miguel Egure make a wide range of classic wines in the heart of the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva comes from old vines over 30 years old, planted in clay-calcareous soil at a high altitude. In the vineyard they use integrated viticulture practices with organic fertiliser and no systematic products. Production is also limited to 35 hectolitres per hectare to achieve a higher concentration in the fruit. Once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually, selecting the clusters one by one.

After the Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva grapes have been destemmed, winemaking begins with native yeasts at a controlled temperature of between 28 and 32ºC for 9 days. There is also a post-fermentation maceration with daily pump-overs for 8 days. Finally, it ages in American oak barrels for 24 months with racking every 4 months for the first year and every 6 for the second.

Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva is a clear example of a long-aged Rioja. A Gran Reserva red wine that, despite its age, maintains a very good balance between fruit and wood.

2015

Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva 2015 unveils itself with sophistication, presenting a spectrum of aromas where ripe red fruits such as cherries and plums intertwine with hints of sweet spices and a subtle undertone of toasted nuts. On the palate, its maturity is expressed through a silky texture, with a concentration that is compelling yet not overpowering, enhanced by nuances of truffle that contribute to its depth and complexity. This red wine is a testament to poise and refinement.

Upon tasting, it unveils a silky and vibrant texture, with a depth of flavors that mirror its aromatic profile. This red wine matures gracefully, delivering an extended, fruit-laden, and delightful finish.
 
2009 Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva 2009 is a mature red wine with complex aromas of ripe red and black fruits, vanilla balsamic notes and roasted spices. On the palate it is vigorous, fresh and balanced. It has a long finish with toasted and spicy notes.
2008 Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva 2008 is a mature red wine with complex aromas of black fruits and toasted spices. On the palate it is structured, flavoursome and well balanced. It has mature tannins and a long and persistent finish.
