About Termanthia
A true relic. A wine comparable to haute couture. The first wine from this region to achieve 100 Parker points. A century of history in a glass. A true icon of the D.O. Toro (in northwestern Spain).
This is a good introduction to Termanthia, the flagship of the Numanthia winery, a true marvel for those who love powerful red wines with character and that leave a mark. Not suitable for untrained palates.
Everything about this wine carries strength and a punch. From the name of the winery (inspired by the Iberian people who lived in the area and resisted the Roman invasion), to the grape variety, the Tinta de Toro, which grows on ungrafted vines that resisted phylloxera. Now, half a century later, these plants, lying at an altitude of 850 metres above sea level on sandy and clay soils, continue to produce a low amount of unbeatable quality fruit in the municipalities of Toro, Morales de Toro, Valdefinjas, Venialbo, El pego and Argujillo. The rest is pure magic, which is the result of the climate, with hot days (which ensure that the berry reaches the correct ripeness and alcohol content) and cold nights that fix the anthocyanins (substances that give the red colour to the wine).
Today, the history of these wineries, founded and owned by the Eguren family until 2008 when it was acquired by the luxury group LVMH, continues to be written with the Thermantia must, where they have chosen to maintain the traditional winemaking processes with destemming, cold pre-fermentation maceration for 5 days, maceration for 24 days and fermentation in French oak barrels of 10 Hl and 20 Hl. The rest of Termanthia’s magic continues to develop in new French Bordeaux oak barrels (where it will spend two periods of 6 months and 16 months respectively). It is racked every four months. A true gem of the D.O. Toro that cannot go unnoticed.
