About Trans Douro Express Baixo Corgo

Trans Douro Express Baixo Corgo is an organic red wine aged in a cement tank and produced by Mateus Nicolau de Almeida in the DOC Douro with the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca varieties.

Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is a great champion of the Douro wine region. Brought up in a winery family, in 2015 he started his own winery and one of his projects is the Trans Douro Express; a collection of three “climatic” wines that express the three sub-regions of the Douro river: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior.

Trans Douro Express Baixo Corgo is a blend of native varieties from Baixo Corgo, in the westernmost part of the Douro. These vines are planted in predominantly shale soils and enjoy a climate of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. They are cultivated using organic agriculture and the grapes are grown without using synthetic pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides.

When the Trans Douro Express Baixo Corgo grapes reach the winery, they spontaneously macerate and ferment with native yeasts and at a controlled temperature in concrete tanks. 8 months later the wine is bottled.


Trans Douro Express Baixo Corgo is part of the climatic wines collection made by Mateus and comes from the coolest area of the Douro. A sensory journey to the lower Douro.

 
2018 Trans Douro Express Baixo Corgo 2018 is a smooth red wine with aromas of black fruit and spicy notes. On the palate it is fresh and juicy with a bright acidity and structured tannins at the end.
