About Trans Douro Express Douro Superior

Trans Douro Express Douro Superior is an organic red wine aged in cement tanks and made by Mateus Nicolau de Almeida with the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela and Touriga Franca varieties in the Portuguese denomination of DOC Douro.

Part of one of the most important wine-growing families in the DOC Douro, Mateus Nicolau de Almeida set up his own project with a collection of climatic wines that showcase the intrinsic characteristics of the three sub-regions of the Douro River. These are three wines made with the same varieties and the same procedure but with very different results due to the climatic and geological characteristics of each area.

The Trans Douro Express Douro Superior wine comes from the most famous part of the river: the Douro Superior. The vines grown on steep, high-altitude plots with predominantly shale soils and a climate with Atlantic influences. They are cultivated using organic agriculture and the grapes are harvested manually.

When the Trans Douro Express Douro grapes reach the winery, they spontaneously macerate and ferment with native yeasts at a controlled temperature in concrete tanks. The wine spends 8 months there before being bottled.

Part of the collection of climatic wines produced by Mateus Nicolau in the Douro Superior, Trans Douro Express Douro Superior is an exceptionally balanced wine. A sensory journey through the Duero Superior.

2018 Trans Douro Express Douro Superior is a concentrated red with aromas of red fruit, floral notes and hints of smoke. On the palate it is silky, fresh and balanced. A wine with good texture, polished tannins and bright acidity.
