About Vía Cénit

Commencing in Seville and advancing to Santiago, the Vía de la Plata, the "Southern Way," is an ancient route established during the Roman Empire for the movement of troops and goods between Mérida and Astorga. An iconic journey steeped in history, culture... and also vineyards! One of the most fascinating points of this route is found in Villanueva de Campeán, a small village in Zamora (Castilla y León) with few inhabitants but a hidden gem: tempranillo vines approximately 80-100 years old. These are vineyards with old roots that have given rise to wines with great character, thanks to Viñas del Cénit, a project initiated in 2004 by José Manuel Benéitez to create wines that not only are consumed but also tell stories.

A fine example of this is Vía Cénit. This wine encompasses everything one might expect from such a rich and diverse land. Tempranillo vineyards situated at 750 metres altitude, on mixed soils combining sand, pebbles, and clay, subjected to an extreme continental climate with cold winters and dry, hot summers. A place where only the most resilient vines survive... and the finest grapes are born.

The vinification of Vía Cénit is as meticulously crafted as the landscape that surrounds it. After a double selection of bunches and grapes, fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, where each plot is processed separately to maximise its expression. Subsequently, the wine spends 14 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. The result is a profound, elegant wine that remains true to its origins.

So, if you ever traverse the Camino de la Plata and decide to stop in Tierra de Vinos de Zamora, you will not only follow in the footsteps of the ancient Romans but also discover a world of authentic wines, such as Vía Cénit, a perfect reflection of the terroir it inhabits.
