About Villota Tinto

Since its official designation in 1925, the D.O.Ca. Rioja has always pursued excellence. This culminated in 1991, when the denomination gained the title of ‘qualified’, the highest wine classification in Spain (a title only shared with El Priorat). They are now going a step further and a new geographical indication has appeared: Viñedo Singular. This designation was introduced in 2017 to label wines from very particular grape plots, which meet very specific conditions: average vine age of 35 years, environmentally friendly cultivation, manual harvest and a maximum production of 5000 kg per hectare (for reds) and 6922 kg (for whites).

This is exactly the type of vineyard used to make Villota Tinto, a Rioja wine produced by the Villota winery, in Rioja Alavesa, in the south of the province of Álava, on the north bank of the Ebro river. Villota Tinto is made from the best grapes taken from the different varieties that were planted by Ricardo Pérez Calvet, the grandfather of the generation now running the winery. The altitude of the 113-hectare estate varies between 380 and 420 metres above sea level, and borders the Ebro River for 3 kilometres. The selected grape bunches are harvested by hand and taken to the winery in boxes. There they are fermented separately. After assemblage, Villota Tinto finishes refining for 18 months in fine-grained French oak barrels and concrete tanks.

Villota, which was previously associated with Cvne under the name Viñedos del Contino, has always been a benchmark in premium wines. Now, as part of a new chapter in its history, starring Carmen Pérez Garrigues (the founder’s great-granddaughter), Villota Tinto has been released, an exceptional wine to savour the true soul of Rioja Alavesa.

2020

Villota Tinto 2020 emerges as a dynamic and spirited wine. As one brings the glass to the nose, an array of aromas unfurls, featuring fresh red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, interwoven with hints of delicate spices and an undercurrent of subtle mint. Upon tasting, it unveils a succulent texture and a richness that is counterbalanced by nuances of liquorice, caramel, and a glint of chocolate. The finish is gently piquant, adding a compelling complexity to this vivacious and exuberant wine.
2019

Villota Tinto 2019 is a richly concentrated, vibrant, and luminous wine. Exceptionally pure. This vintage unveils spiced aromas, with a distinctive hallmark of the brand that renders these wines particularly captivating on the nose. On the palate, one can discern the flavors of chocolate, caramel, and a hint of minerality. It is intense yet balanced. Refreshingly delightful. The finish is prolonged.
2018

Villota Tinto 2018 is a concentrated wine made with Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha Tinta. On the nose, the mineral and spicy aromas stand out, accompanied by touches of menthol, liquorice, caramel, chocolate and red fruit. On the palate, it is fresh, balanced and intense with a lot of persistence. Smooth tannins and well integrated wood.
