About Viuda Negra

Beginnings are never easy, and indulgences, particularly the more extravagant ones, demand a bit of extra effort, especially in one's youth when entering the workforce is still in its early stages. After all, who hasn't worked in some establishment during their younger years to earn a bit of cash? Who hasn't spent an entire summer slogging away to buy the motorcycle of their dreams? For Javier San Pedro Ortega, that indulgence was La Taconera, an old 0.4-hectare vineyard located in Laguardia (within the D.O.Ca. Rioja), which he managed to purchase at just 17 years old with money earned from bartending. Great anecdotes often herald a remarkable story, and the tale of Viuda Negra La Taconera and Javier San Pedro Ortega is indeed one of them.

Nonetheless, the sacrifice and labour did not end there. With Viuda Negra La Taconera, a journey of dedication began, where Javier succeeded in reviving the vines of this vineyard, originally planted in 1920, which had suffered from "disastrous" neglect. Many of Javier's decisions were not without controversy, as numerous locals were sceptical of the vertical training system he adopted. However, contrary to their doubts, this method allowed the grapes better aeration, providing shade from the leaves during the hottest parts of the day, enduring the Atlantic climate—dry and sunny—that prevails in this area (slightly more humid than the rest of the denomination).

The tempranillo of Viuda Negra La Taconera, nourished by clay-limestone soils tilled by animals, ripens perfectly and is harvested by hand into boxes without any issues. The artisanal and manual processes don't end there, as Viuda Negra La Taconera is also hand-destemmed before moving to the fermentation tanks. Finally, Viuda Negra La Taconera will rest in French oak barrels until it is bottled and released in a very exclusive and limited edition. Don't let it slip away!
