About Waterkloof Circumstance Chenin Blanc

Billed as a ‘winery in the sky’ with huge transparent glass walls revealing an ultra-modern gravity cellar and endless views of the amphitheater of vineyards just 4 kilometres off the coast of False Bay (Coastal Region), Waterkloof is the personal project of wine distributor and winemaker Paul Boutinot. A building built under biodynamic precepts on the outskirts of Somerset West, in Cape Town (South Africa), it has accumulated a multitude of awards, both for its architecture integrated into the wonderful landscape of the Stellenbosch WO, and for its sustainable practices in winemaking. Undoubtedly, a must-see destination for the great wine tourists of the world.  

A pioneer in biodynamic winemaking in South Africa, the estate places a strong emphasis on minimal intervention and gentle management to maintain natural cycles in every process. Its white wine Waterkloof Circumstance Chenin Blanc is a single varietal chenin blanc from old vines planted in sandy soils with medium-sized stones that aid drainage. They’re cultivated using organic agriculture and biodynamic treatments while taking lunar cycles into consideration, and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes are pressed in whole bunches in a modern basket press to extract the juice in the most gentle way. The must is then naturally decanted for 24 hours and racked into 600-litre oak barrels to begin the fermentation process with native yeasts. There the wine remains on its own lees for approximately 6 months before bottling.

As its name suggests, Waterkloof Circumstance Chenin Blanc is the result of a combination of circumstances that makes it unique. A wine born in a heavenly destination that makes it one of the best single varietal chenin blancs with wood in South Africa.

On the palate, it is expansive, velvety, and well-rounded. This gentle wine boasts a delightful heft, an alluring mineral texture, and a harmoniously balanced acidity that endows it with complexity and sophistication.
