About Waterkloof Seriously Cool Chenin Blanc

Two adjectives describe this range of Waterkloof wines: “cool” and “serious”. This winery is a pioneer of biodynamic winemaking in South Africa, and lies in the country’s largest and most important wine region, in Stellenbosch, with vineyards located in the cooler region of False Bay. These are old vines planted in an exceptional terroir that were found by the winery’s director Paul Boutinot and, facing the challenges of the South Atlantic environment every day, he has managed to produce some seriously structured fine wines with sophisticated restraint.

Within this range is Waterkloof Seriously Cool Chenin Blanc. This wine is made with Chenin Blanc, the African continent’s white variety par excellence, which comes from 30-40 year old bush vines in the Helderberg and Stellenbosch regions. The Helderberg vineyards are close to the sea on sandy soils with medium-sized rocks and the Stellenbosch vines enjoy a nice cool breeze and are planted in poor sandy soils. The result is a ripe raw material with good concentration and balanced acidity. Biodynamic treatments are applied in the vineyard, taking into account the lunar cycles and preserving the natural “life circle” in all areas of the estate. Both vineyards have a low production of about 4 t/ha and, following a manual harvest in the early hours of the morning, the whole bunches are immediately pressed. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts in a combination of cement vats and oak barrels for 5 months.
Finally, the resulting wine remains in contact with the lees before bottling.

As the bottle label itself suggests, Waterkloof Seriously Cool Chenin Blanc is the result of the surrounding environment. An area touched by the Atlantic winds, which, cold and harsh, result in a fresh, mineral and seriously structured white wine.

On the nose, it exudes fresh aromas of stone fruits such as peach and apricot, augmented by hints of lime and delicate floral undertones. 2018

Waterkloof Seriously Cool Chenin Blanc 2018 is a creamy white wine that offers intense citrus aromas, floral notes of jasmine and acacia and hints of dried fruit. On the palate it is rich, fresh and harmonious. A wine with an excellent structure, an unctuous and mineral mid-palate and a long and deep finish.
