About Zárate Espadeiro

Zárate Espadeiro is a single-variety Espadeiro red wine produced by the Záratewinery in the D.O. Rías Baixas in Galicia, Spain.


Zárate Espadeiro comes from plots lying at an altitude of 50 metres above sea level, with soils composed of a type of granite called xabre and vines aged around 60 years old.


The harvest is carried out manually with the grapes selected in the vineyard. When they reach the winery, the bunches are destemmed and then ferment in an open stainless steel vat. Once fermentation is finished, there is a daily cap plunge for four weeks to extract aromas and colour.

The resulting wine is aged for 12 months in third-use, 500-litre French oak barrels where it also undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine is finally bottled without filtering or clarifying.


The Espadeiro variety is one of the native red grapes in Val do Salnés, in the D.O. Rías Baixas, and produces wines with an intense red colour that are full-bodied and aromatic, acidic and have a moderate alcohol content. Wineries like Zárate are working hard to produce Galician reds with plenty of personality, like this Zárate Espadeiro. These wines are catching people’s attention and surprising expert critics around the world.
