About Artuke El Escolladero

Artuke El Escolladero is a barrel-aged red wine made by Bodegas y Viñedos Artuke with the Tempranillo and Graciano varieties in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

Artuke is an acronym of the names Arturo and Kike. A small project set up by the Blanco brothers who, in line with their family’s hundred-year-old winemaking tradition, decided to make their own wines with strong personalities. With a total of 22 hectares of their own vineyards spread around the towns of Baños de Ebro, Ábalos and San Vicente de la Sonsierra (Rioja Alta), they are part of the Rioja'n'Roll group of producers, who are dedicated to extracting the greatest expression of the terroir in each bottle.

Artuke El Escolladero comes from vineyards located in the Alava town of Ábalos at 660 metres above sea level. Named Escollo because of how hard it is to reach the vineyards, this plot contains vines over 60 years old on clay-calcareous soils. They use respectful viticulture, applying biodynamic practices and the harvest is carried out manually in small boxes.

In the winery, the Artuke El Escolladero grapes are selected and destemmed manually. They are then racked in 2,000 kg micro tanks, where they undergo cap plunges and pump overs every day. Once the spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts has finished, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in 600-litre French oak barrels. It then ages there for between 12 and 16 months before bottling. 

Artuke El Escolladero is a red wine that, as the name implies, is difficult to make and not very readily available, being a limited production. A wine that offers all the power of the variety without losing its composure.

It has fine tannins and a deep freshness. The finish is very pleasant with an intense retronasal of red fruit aromas on a spicy background.
