Everything commenced in 1988 when Hans and Carrie, an American-Danish couple, embarked on a voyage to find a place to settle down, raise their family, and bring their vinous passion to life. Their journey led them to Alentejo, Portugal, where they discovered an arid land with incredible potential. For Carrie, the landscape was reminiscent of her native California. For Hans, born in Denmark, the pleasant climate captivated him instantly.
However, the beginnings were not easy. In a region dominated by white varieties, they decided to plant reds, challenging local traditions and opting for something different. Against all odds, Cortes de Cima was born with the spirit of those who believe in the impossible.
The family grew, as did the vineyard. In 1991, Thomas was born, in 1993 Anna, and in 1998 a unique syrah, a dark wine with perfect balance and a sumptuous finish that marked a turning point in the winery's history.
In 2019, Anna Jorgensen, the daughter of Hans and Carrie, took the helm of the family project with a clear vision of sustainability, minimal intervention, and absolute respect for the terroir. With her philosophy of “less is more,” she reduced the vineyard from 240 to less than 100 hectares, focusing on authentic wines true to the land with an unmistakable character.
One of its great exemplars is Cortes de Cima Chaminé Tinto, a vibrant blend of the varieties aragonez, syrah, touriga nacional, alicante bouschet, and trincadeira. Its production follows a natural and meticulous process with organic and regenerative agriculture and a manual nocturnal harvest respecting the vine's natural cycle. In the winery, fermentation is spontaneous with 30% whole clusters and gentle extractions. Afterwards, the wine ages for 12 months in old French oak barrels, followed by another 12 months resting in stainless steel. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtration.
The result is Cortes de Cima Chaminé Tinto, a red wine with ripe fruit and elegant structure that reflects the essence of Alentejo and the dedication of those who create it. A dream that began with Hans and Carrie and is now kept alive by their daughter Anna, with her own style, in every bottle.
