About Moncerbal

Descendientes de J. Palacios Moncerbal is a red wine crafted by Bodegas Descendientes de J Palacios in Villafranca del Bierzo, León. The winery was established by Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo in 1999, captivated by the potential of the region and the Mencía grape variety.

Descendientes de J. Palacios Moncerbal is a wine from a specific plot located in the Villa de Corullón, on soils composed of slate, quartz, and marble. It is primarily south-west facing at an average altitude of 700 meters on steep slopes, enduring a continental climate with a strong Atlantic influence. The vineyard is managed according to biodynamic farming principles.

The winemaking process is highly artisanal, in open wooden vats with gentle foot treading to ferment the must with the skins, alongside indigenous yeasts. It is left to macerate for 35 days and then transferred to small French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and subsequent ageing.

Descendientes de J. Palacios Moncerbal represents another plot in Corullón, another facet where the concentration imparted by the soil is the predominant note, yet without losing the finesse provided by the Atlantic climate influence and the vibrancy of the old vines.

2023

Descendientes de J. Palacios Moncerbal 2023 is a light red wine with a fluid profile. On the nose, it stands out for its aromas of fresh red fruits such as strawberries and raspberries, accompanied by a subtle hint of cherry. On the palate, it is smooth and refreshing, with a balanced acidity that enhances its fruity flavours. Its time in barrel imparts a slight spicy note that complements its fresh and fruity character.
2022

Descendientes de J. Palacios Moncerbal 2022 is a fluid, intense, and very special red wine. On the nose, it is very seductive, with floral and fruity notes (red currant) and other more original ones, such as rhubarb. On the palate, it is exquisite, with a brilliant acidity and a very light sensation. The finish is long, tannic, and granulated.
2020 Moncerbal 2020 is a red wine that on the nose presents intense aromas of dark fruit accompanied by a subtle floral hint. On the palate, it is succulent, with a solid structure and precision. A red wine that is fresh, profound, and forthright, with an elegant and ethereal character.
2016 This place on the slopes of Corullón is different because it has the most mineral soil of all the region.  This results in a much greater complexity and minerality, that is conspicuous by the violets that are characteristic of cold areas in France and white flower aromas.  It has a medium body on the palate and a sharp, not rounded structure which gives the wine an extraordinary personality.
2011 Both powerful and delicate at the same time. Good attack, long and tasty on the palate with a high concentration of fruit. Spicy, again very balsamic, with fine tannins and a great acidity, which together with some notes of alcohol provide freshness and a long, very persistent and extremely fruity finish  leaving smoked aromas at retro-olfaction.

Beautiful cherry red colour with violet reflections. Medium-high robe, very bright. Thin and coloured tears show on the glass.

Clean, highly intense, complex nose, full of nuances in perfect harmony with eachother. Ripe red and black fruits, pleasant floral notes, spiced notes and pleasant toasted hints from fine woods. Balsamic, mineral and extremely tasty.
2010 In the mouth, it is powerful and delicate at the same time. Good attack and long and tasty mid-palate, with a great load of fruit. It is also spiced and once again, very balsamic, with a fine and pleasant tannic sensation and a great acidity, which together with some notes of alcohol provide freshness and a long and very persistent and extremely fruity finish which leaves smoked aromas at retro-olfaction.
