About Valdafoz

Descendientes de J. Palacios Valdafoz is a red wine made from Mencía grapes with a small percentage of local white grapes, crafted by the winery Descendientes de J. Palacios under the D.O. Bierzo in Castilla y León, Spain.

The clusters used to produce Descendientes de J. Palacios Valdafoz originate from the eponymous site, where the predominant schist soils with a laminar structure are managed with cover crops due to the steep slopes and erosion risk.
This vineyard is home to vines aged between 50 and 90 years, cultivated according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture.

The harvest is conducted manually with meticulous selection. Upon arrival at the winery, the bunches are partially destemmed and crushed to initiate alcoholic fermentation in wooden vats using indigenous yeasts and regular punch-downs. The nascent wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation and is aged in barrels and foudres for approximately 15 months, depending on the vintage.

Ricardo Pérez Palacios fell in love with Bierzo and, together with his uncle, the renowned oenologist Álvaro Palacios, founded Descendientes de J. Palacios in 1999, named in honour of their grandfather and Álvaro's father. This winery produces some of the most elegant and sought-after Mencía reds in the world. The wine Descendientes de J. Palacios Valdafoz presents a profound and mystical expression of the signature variety of this Bierzo site.
