For many Bordeaux wine enthusiasts, it is almost an article of faith that if you seek the finest cabernet franc, you should journey to Saint-Émilion or Pomerol, on the right bank of the region. But let's be honest; for a long time, this grape has been considered Bordeaux's understated companion, the elegant guest who accompanies the great stars but rarely steals the spotlight. However, the true home of cabernet franc lies in the Loire Valley, a region where the grape has found its voice, its distinct character, and where the world is finally beginning to acknowledge its purity, authenticity, and its ability to faithfully reflect the terroir of its origin.
And it is precisely here where Domaine de Pallus, in the prestigious DO Chinon, embodies the greatness of this revelation. The history of the Sourdais family as farmers dates back to 1889, when Bertrand's great-great-grandmother acquired a small estate that extended beyond the vineyards: there were cows, chickens, geese, ducks... a microcosm of rural life where everything was cultivated with passion and care. Bertrand Sourdais, the fifth generation of this family, has absorbed this tradition since childhood, playing among the vines and animals, learning to listen to the land, and today transforms that heritage into wines that are genuine contemporary masterpieces, never losing respect for their roots.
Domaine de Pallus La Rougerie is the most evident testament to this legacy. The plot is situated in the upper area of the domaine, on a gentle south-facing slope, with pure clay soil that imparts depth, majesty, and an almost mystical character to the cabernet franc. The vines were planted in two phases, in 1952 and 2007, following a massal selection that ensures the purity and authenticity of each vine. Bertrand cultivates biodynamically, with limited yields, and vinifies with an almost obsessive precision: most of the grapes are destemmed, the maceration lasts between 25 and 30 days in open wooden vats, and the ageing extends over 18 months in carefully toasted new Burgundy barrels.
Domaine de Pallus La Rougerie is the living expression of a tradition passed down from generation to generation, with patience, respect for the land, and above all, with an absolute and unconditional love for cabernet franc.
