About Dominio de Es La Diva

In the realm of divas (from the Latin for goddess), there is no middle ground. They either become legends or vanish as swiftly as they appeared. Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, or Beyoncé in pop music; Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, or Grace Kelly in cinema; and in opera, voices like Maria Callas or Montserrat Caballé, capable of halting an entire theatre before the first applause. Different eras and stages, yet a common trait: presence, magnetism, and the ability to command everything.

This notion of a diva—not as excess, but as the unrepeatable—finds an unexpected echo in wine. For here too, there are names that do not compete on volume, but on intensity. Wines that do not seek to please everyone, but to linger in memory.

In this realm lies La Diva, de Dominio de Es.

On the quieter edge of the Ribera del Duero in Soria, in Atauta, lies Dominio de Es, the project of Bertrand Sourdais. Educated in Bordeaux and experienced in esteemed houses such as Château Mouton Rothschild or alongside Álvaro Palacios, Sourdais—a fifth-generation vigneron at Domaine de Pallus—arrived in Soria in the late 1990s and discovered a vineyard that seemed less a block and more a scattered archive of bush vines, many pre-phylloxera, spread across sandy, limestone, and clay soils, at over 950 metres in altitude.

Dominio de Es La Diva originates from an almost unique plot, a mere 0.17 hectares in the Valdegatiles area of Atauta. A bush vineyard of tinto fino and albillo, pre-phylloxera, on pure sand resting on limestone rock. A soil that is almost a direct line between surface and origin.

The winemaking follows the same logic of extreme precision. Manual harvesting, long macerations of about 25 days, and ageing in Burgundian barrels of French oak. Everything aims to refine, not interfere.
The result is around 600 bottles a year of a wine that asserts itself not by volume, but by definition. It possesses tension, depth, and an almost ethereal elegance, but above all, a quality that is difficult to articulate. A presence that does not need to raise its voice to command the scene. Because, like the great divas of opera, cinema, or music, La Diva does not compete for attention. It simply captures it.

Dominio de Es La Diva 2022 is a wine that, despite its youth, is serious and elegant, with great ageing potential. A red wine with aromas of red and black fruits, a lot of structure and freshness and all the character worthy of a great wine. Extraordinary!
2017 2017 has been defined by widespread frosts in the north of Spain, but Ribera del Duero Soriana has been saved by the usual late budding of the vineyard. The winter was dry and not too cold, which was followed by a somewhat atypical spring with slightly higher temperatures and little rain. Budding was staggered, and flowering was rapid and quite early. A summer heat wave at the end of June caused a water shortage and slowed down the growth of the grapes. Then, in July, temperatures dropped and it rained, which helped rehydrate the grapes. The veraison happened slowly, due to cool temperatures at night. The grapes were harvested between September 21 and 23. According to Bertrand Sourdais: “The wines combine intensity and ripeness with an organic quality due to minimum cold temperatures and summer rains. A precise vintage thanks to extremely fast flowering.”
2014 Dominio de Es La Diva 2014 is an exuberant, honest, elegant and calm wine. A vintage with a great ageing potential. Explosive on the nose, with ripe red and black fruit, very elegant toasted notes on a mineral background. In the mouth, it is voluminous and ample, with a lot of structure and a fresh and very long finish.
