Do you fancy yourself an expert on Verdejo wines? Do you believe no nuance of this variety escapes you? Think you've sampled everything crafted in the D.O. Rueda? Allow us to cast doubt on that. Such claims hold no ground if you haven't tasted El Lagar de Moha Varron Cuvée Especial.
If the adjective 'elegant' were to be paired with a wine, it would undoubtedly be El Lagar de Moha Varron Cuvée Especial, a white wine with character, highly sophisticated, aged in wood, and crafted exclusively from the finest grapes selected from the vineyard. This masterpiece is the work of Alberto Moro, owner and soul of this winery, whose vineyards are spread between Rueda and Nava del Rey. Traditionally, Alberto's family has been connected to wine in this region; however, from an early age, Alberto dreamed of owning his own winery. Together with his wife Ángeles Ortega, he achieved this, currently working in one of the most promising estates of the denomination, both for their fieldwork and winemaking. As for the former, El Lagar de Moha stands as the first winery in the D.O. Rueda to obtain organic certification; in the latter, it is notable for its experimentation with different materials. In El Lagar de Moha Varron Cuvée Especial, fermentation occurs in concrete tanks, although later the thirds transition to wood, where it will rest for 15 to 16 months.
A living testament to dedication and patience. El Lagar de Moha Varron Cuvée Especial epitomises the pinnacle of quality. This attribute is nurtured from the outset, with manual harvesting. This task, perhaps much more meticulous than others, allows for an exhaustive selection of grapes that will subsequently enter the winery for processing. These clusters must exhibit an optimal state of ripeness, a result of the stark thermal contrast typical of the continental climate that prevails in the area. Added to this is a slight Atlantic influence, resulting in precipitation that is retained in the deeper clay and limestone layers of the soil. Conversely, on the surface, where pebbles appear, water drains much more easily, thus preventing the onset of fungal diseases. Undoubtedly, the variety that best adapts to this scenario is the Verdejo, the native grape of the region, which under these conditions reaches its utmost expression.
After pressing, El Lagar de Moha Varron Cuvée Especial ferments in concrete tanks, naturally and with indigenous yeasts, which will transform the wine into the ultimate expression of this terroir. The process will conclude with ageing of 12 to 15 months in 600-litre French oak barrels.
Do you still believe you've conquered all that Verdejo has to offer? El Lagar de Moha Varron Cuvée Especial is here to show you there's always more to discover. Long live the Verdejo!
