Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice is a wood-aged red wine made by Elvio Cogno in the DOCG Barolo, in Piedmont (Italy) with a clone of the Nebbiolo variety called Lampia.
After working for many years at Marcarini, one of the most prestigious wineries in La Morra, Elvio Cogno decided to set up his own project in 1990 when he acquired a historic 18th century estate in Novello. A total of 11 hectares of vineyards located on the hills of the Bricco Ravera that have been cultivated and vinified with the utmost respect, producing high quality red wines with a classic character. Today the project continues along the same lines, with Elvio’s daughter Nadia and son-in-law Valter Fissore.
Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice comes from a 2-hectare subzone of the Ravera estate that lies 320 metres above sea level. Considered by Elvio himself as a Grand Cru with limestone and calcareous soils, it has vines ranging from 25 to 65 years old. These vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture, limiting the vineyard density to 5,000 vines per hectare, and the grapes are harvested by hand as soon as they reach optimum ripeness.
In the winery, Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice is fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts at a controlled temperature. It undergoes a post-fermentation maceration for 30 days with a submerged cap and after malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels (25-30 hl) where it remains for 24 months. Finally, it is aged in the bottle for 18 months.
Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice is one of the latest releases from this prestigious winery in the Langhe. A very limited production that expresses the depth, richness and concentration of the Lampia variety, a Nebbioloclone.
